Dressage is unforgiving about panel balance. A saddle that bridges at the cantle or bears down behind the shoulder blade will show you in the score sheet before it shows up in the tack room. We look for makers whose panels follow the horse's back from the point of the tree all the way to the rear gusset, with enough wool flocking to let a qualified saddle fitter adjust the contact surface as the horse develops topline through training. The gullet channel has to stay clear of the spinous processes through collection and extension — we want to see it hold its width from tree to panel, not pinch on a Second Level horse tracking up under load. Flap cut matters too: a straight-bar or lightly forward flap keeps the rider's leg under the hip, not pushed ahead of it.
